This Aikido Bokuto is made from solid Japanese red oak, designed especially for Aikido practice. Favored by Iwama Style practitioners, it has a blunt tip and a slight curve (Sori). The thicker handle (Tsuka) helps you build a strong grip (Tenouchi), which is important for Aikido techniques. Its sturdy design is great for hard contact training and Tanrenuchi exercises, making it a durable and reliable choice for your practice.

What is Japanese White Oak?

The White Oak used for Japanese Bokuto, known as 'Shirogashi,' is different from North American White Oak. While both types of oak are related, Shirogashi is an evergreen tree and lacks the open grain found in American oaks.

This open grain in American Oak makes it softer and more prone to damage from impact. In contrast, Shirogashi has a uniformly hard structure, which makes it more resistant to dents and impact.

Shirogashi also has denser grains compared to Akagashi, making it slightly heavier but more durable. Because of these properties, Shirogashi is highly valued for making high-quality Bokuto.

Red Oak Bokuto is oil treated. White Oak, however, is completely untreated. For a 'how to' guideon waxing wooden weapons, please check out our walk-through video, "How to wax Bokken."
