Maeda Toshimasu, better known as Maeda Keiji, was a Japanese samurai of the Civil War Period through early Edo Period. When the Tokugawa challenged the Uesugi in 1600, he fought with Uesugi's army. In the battle against the Mogami, he broke through the enemy lines with only eight riders, and shattered their formation. After the Uesugi clan's move to the Yonezawa Domain, Toshimasu remained with them, serving as a retainer. The Tensho style Fuchi/Kashira is made of brass and finished in antique silver style.. Tsuba is extra big and heavy and features theme of an eagle on pine tree to recall Maeda Keiji's favorite horse, Matsukaze(literally meaning pine tree and wind). Menuki is made of silver and features the big dragon. Tsuka is bound with blue cotton cord over red-lacquered stingray skin and Saya is Shuro(vermilion gloss finish). Sageo is a hand-woven Sanadahimo cord with sophisticated two-tone color. The extra wide blade is made of sand-cased, reinforced zinc/aluminum alloy and provides the superb balance for the dynamic air-slashing move. Hamon pattern reproduces the Kanemoto. Each parts are uncompromisingly hand-assembled by the Japanese sword craftsman, who is expert in making the genuine Japanese sword, Shinken. The blade is available up to 2.70 shaku. Weight without Saya is approximately 1000 gram(for 2.50 shaku). Proudly made in Japan. Features A sand-casted, reinforced zinc/aluminum alloy blade with reproduction of Sekino Magoroku Hamon Approximately 950 gram without the Saya(for 2.50 Shaku) Light blue cotton Tsuka Hinerimaki wrapping over dark red stingray skin Silver-plated Tensho Fuchi/Kashira with Kesho Yasuri finish Brass Menuki with Kenmakiryu(a coiling dragon around a sword) Shuro finished Saya Handwoven cotton Sanadahimo Sageo Handmade in Japan.

Great quality

The quality of this iaito is clear from the first moment you hold it in your hands: balance, weight, craftmanship, everything is at top quality and there is nothing to complain about.

Personally, I would have preferred a silk tsuka wrapping: it would have enhanced the overall quality of the iaito.
The blue cotton looks actually darker in the pictures shown on the product page; the real color is lighter.
This is not a great problem, but in my opinion, it would have been better to have a darker blue.

In any case, I am very pleased with the purchase.
