Antique Shinken Wakizashi - Tokyo 300236
Antique Japanese Wakizashi, signed Yokoyama Kōzuke no Kami Fujiwara Sukesada
Edo Period (Shinto)
Workmanship and condition
The blade is in overall great condition, though a few areas of light black rust are visible along the blade in certain locations. There are no chips along the edge or major scratches.
The signature and date
Signed Yokoyama Kōzuke no Kami Fujiwara. However, without NBTHK classification, we are offering this item as a "mumei" class wakizashi.
The koshirae
The tsuka of this koshirae has been recently re-wrapped in beautiful navy silk with slender wide diamonds showing much of the ray skin within. A tachi style kashira gives a unique look to this koshirae while also allowing much of the ray skin within to be viewed. The saya as well has a more recent lacquering with a unique speckled crimson tone.
All fittings are antique and although show expected signs of their age, are lovely with lots of character. The beautiful tsuba has small key elements of gold inlay which bring the characters within the design to life.
