Ono-ha Itto-ryu

Ono-ha Itto-ryu is one of Japan's oldest and most influential schools of classical swordsmanship. While the original Itto-ryu was founded by Ito Ittosai Kagehisa during the late Sengoku period, the Ono branch was established by his successor, Ono Jiroemon Tadaaki (1565~1628). Under Tadaaki's leadership, the school became one of the official sword traditions of the Tokugawa Shogunate and played a significant role in shaping the development of Japanese kenjutsu during the Edo period.

The school is best known for its emphasis on direct, efficient technique and the concept of kiriotoshi, a decisive cut that controls and defeats an opponent in a single action. Rather than relying on elaborate movements, Ono-ha Itto-ryu teaches practitioners to seize the initiative through correct timing, distance, and unwavering spirit. Its influence can still be seen today in many later schools of swordsmanship, as well as in the principles that eventually contributed to the development of modern kendo.
