Hokushin Itto-ryu

Hokushin Itto-ryu was founded in the early nineteenth century by Chiba Shusaku Narimasa (1792 E855), one of the most respected swordsmen of the late Edo period. The school quickly became one of the leading kenjutsu traditions of its time, attracting students from throughout Japan to Chiba's Genbukan dojo in Edo. Built upon the principles of the Itto-ryu tradition, Hokushin Itto-ryu developed a systematic curriculum that emphasized practical technique, disciplined training, and the cultivation of correct timing and distance.

The kata of Hokushin Itto-ryu are designed to teach decisive, efficient swordsmanship through precise body movement and control of the center line. Practiced with traditional wooden swords, these forms develop proper posture, footwork, and spirit while preserving techniques that have been handed down for more than two centuries. Today, the school remains one of Japan's best known classical sword traditions, with its kata continuing to embody the practical and disciplined approach that made Hokushin Itto-ryu so highly regarded during the Bakumatsu period.
