Historical Background

Yagyu Jubei was a swordsman and a writer in the early Edo period. Although there is very little known about his life, he grew up under the care of his father, Munenori, who was looked up to by the first two Shogun of the Tokugawa family as a sword master. He went on to go on a 武者修行, warrior's pilgrimage, and traveled all over Japan to learn and teach the way of swords. He wrote significant works on not only the technique but also the philosophy of being a Kenshi, still read by many people.

Yagyu cherished his swords made by Miike Tenta, better known as Mitsuyo. Miike was a renowned swordsmith in Chikugo prefecture in the late Heian era. The characteristic of his swords is their dynamic appearance. The 'O-tenta', the great Tenta, is one of the greatest five swords of Japan, and this sword has been regarded as a priceless national treasure since the reign of the Ashikaga Shogunate.
