Ono Ha Itto Ryu Bokuto

The Itto Ryu Bokuto has less curvature (Sori) than standard Bokuto or Yagyu Shinkage Ryu Bokuto and features a thicker handle and blade. This design makes it ideal for Suburi and paired contact Kenjutsu Kata training. We offer both long and short Bokuto in white oak, with urethane coating, and various wood types and finishes can be customized upon request.

What is Itto Ryu?

Itto Ryu is a major Kenjutsu school that helped shape modern Kendo. Known for its direct and effective techniques, it features moves like "Kiriotoshi," where you deflect and quickly counterstrike.

The style uses a special thick wrist/forearm protector called "Onigote" for safe contact practice with Bokuto. Founded by the legendary Ito Ittosai and later led by Ono Jiro Uemon Tadaaki, it became one of the Tokugawa shogunate's official styles.

Now led by Takemi Sasamori, the 17th headmaster, Itto Ryu's techniques influenced other styles like Daito-Ryu Aikijujutsu and Aikido.
