What is Jikishin Kage Ryu?

Jikishin Kage Ryu is a Shinkage Ryu-based style that focuses heavily on "Kokyu," or the coordination of breathing and movement. It is known for using extremely heavy "Furibo" (training sticks), some weighing over 100 pounds, for Suburi exercises. Working with such heavy tools demands precise coordination to avoid injury.

This style was widely practiced during the late Edo period due to its practical and effective training methods. Respected swordsmen like Kenkichi Sakakibara and Otani Seiichiro mastered and taught Jikishin Kage Ryu during this time. Notably, Takeda Sokaku, the founder of Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu, also trained in Jikishin Kage Ryu along with Ono-ha Itto Ryu.

Red Oak Bokuto is oil treated. White Oak, however, is completely untreated. For a 'how to' guide on waxing wooden weapons, please check out our walk-through video, "How to wax Bokken."
