Saburau - Koto Higo Koshirae Iaito
Tozando, in cooperation with Hyosho Taisha-ryu's Yamamoto Takahiro Shihan, is proud to present this Premium Higo Koshirae Iaito to celebrate the Saburau Exhibition. With it's lacquered bohi groove, tsuka-ito wrapping and luxurious kanshitsu saya - this is an unmistakable iaito that draws heavily from the traditions of the Sengoku-jidai (warring states period).
If you haven't heard of the Saburau Exposition already, it is a touring collaborative project that celebrates contemporary artists, craftsmen and martial arts practitioners all centered around the theme of samurai. A key exponent of this project is Taisha-ryu's Yamamoto Takahiro Shihan who worked with us to bring forth this brand new iaito that is based on the records of his ryu-ha. Taisha-ryu was founded during the Sengoku-jidai and this sword is based on the higo koshirae of that era and is based on designs from Taisha-ryu's records.
All of the lacquer-work on this koshirae is applied painstakingly by hand, using genuine Japanese urushi lacquer. This lacquer-work extends to the tsuka, where suede leather ito are then lacquered in black to create a durable and reinforced tsuka. An element required by swords of the period, that would expect to often see battle. This practicality can be seen in other areas like the koiguchi and kojiri reinforcement on the saya.
The sword features the robust double namako tsuba, commonly known as a Musashi tsuba, as well as scroll-work across the higo-style fuchi and kashira. finally the menuki depict the Kuyomon - traditional symbol of Hyoho Taisha-ryu.
Like all our iaito, this has been designed to be used for iaido practice and is balanced and adjusted by our craftsmen personally. It is available to be shipped internationally for free.
*Iaito are made with an aluminum zinc alloy blade and cannot be sharpened.
