Evoking the spirit of Musashi as portrayed in Yasuo Mikami’s film of the same name, this Miyamoto Musashi Koshirae keeps to the standard of Musashi lore. The general theme remains pragmatic, but adds a dash of realism to the character portrayed in the film through each rigorously selected detail. Subtle nods to this can be found in the tsuba, the shape of which harkens back to Musashi’s own hand made double-ringed tsuba. The fuchi-kashira, kojiri, and reinforcing rings on the saya are from the handachi style of katana and help to create the image of a weapon crafted for practicality, not ostentation. It brings the character of the film closer, while remaining true to the man both the sword and the actor endeavor to bring to life.
The film Musashi is an ambitious piece directed by Mikami Yasuo (he also directed Shundou in 2013). Mikami strives to capture true authenticity in his works and consequently films entirely on location. This commitment to a genuine atmosphere led the director to choose Tozando to develop and provide the swords for the film.
