Haori were originally sleeveless overcoats worn over yoroi armor to keep samurai warm during cold weather on the battlefield. As the samurai entered the prolonged peace of the Edo Jidai battles became uncommon and the haori was adapted to everyday use and eventually spread across all classes. Iaidogi are often very thin and can get cold during the winter, traditional haori can be used for a warm layer during cold keiko whilst retaining a traditional elegance.
